Founder Director National Film Archive of India, Pune. Film historian, Film critic, Film Teacher, Film Festival Consultant and a Film Archivist of international repute. The chief architect behind the NFAI (National Film Archive of India), for nearly three decades, right from its inception in the mid sixties, first as Assistant Curator, then Curator and finally as the Director “PK”, as he is fondly known among FIAF (International Federation of Film Archive) colleagues, and as Nairsaab among FTII graduates, Mr. Nair did pioneering work in the field of film preservation, documentation and dissemination of film culture in the world’s largest film producing country. He is largely responsible for developing the NFAI, Pune, virtually from scratch to an institution of international reckoning. As the first Asian member of FIAF’s Executive committee for three consecutive terms he could bring to the notice of the International Archive community, how to come to grips with the problems of film preservation in a tropical climate like India, by indigenous means and with limited resources. Did serve as Chairman / member of several national and International Film Festival Juries . Written extensively on Indian and world cinema and guided several Indian and foreign scholars on research projects pertaining to Indian Cinema. Continue to be actively involved in designing film courses and developing indigenous training methodologies for the spread of film literacy and media awareness in the subcontinent, as well as promotion of Indian film studies abroad. At present he is engaged as a consultant for preparing the concept paper and project report for setting up a Museum of Moving Images (MOMI) at Films Division, Bombay for the Govt of India. |
